Microfunds for African Atheists launched by SF nonprofit
Mubarak Muhammed Bala is an ex-Muslim, now-atheist, living in a Nigeria province where sharia is the Islamic law-of-the-land. He gets death threats for his heretical opinions, and he was fired from a job by an Islamist. How can Mubarak - an apostate - economically survive? Who will help him?
Humanists.Global - a project directed by the secular nonprofit Brighter Brains Institute (BBI) - delivers $300 startup funds to atheist entrepreneurs in African nations, specifically Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Congo, and Ghana.
Humanist.Global is directed by Hank Pellissier, an activist who founded “the world first atheist film festival’ in 2009, he produced an atheist calendar in 2010, he launched BBI in 2013 and he started “the world’s first atheist orphanage” in 2015.
$300 is enough to buy a sewing machine, fruit juicer, used motorcycle, ten milk goats, washing machine, kerosene tank, corn grinder, fifty chickens, popcorn machine, or dozens of other items for new business ventures in Africa. Humanist.Global / BBI has provided funds for 77 small projects. The majority go to women’s collectives.
Mubarak Bala (he dropped “Muhammed” from his name) invested his $300 on a barbecue grill for his new street food stall, “Kaduna Fries.” He hires Almajiri boys as helpers; Almajiri are delivered by impoverished parents to Islamic centers where they receive zero education, except for the Quran; they’re forced to beg for food in the street, frequently abused, and often sold as slaves for day labor. The result is ominous - 80% of Boko Haram terrorists were formerly Almajiri. The boys Mubarak Bala hires will have a far better future. $300… well-spent!
The intention of Humanists.Global is to 1) help atheist individuals survive who are marginalized and persecuted for their beliefs. 2) help atheist organizations expand their membership. All applicants must be be “out” atheists certified in a group like Nigerian Humanists Association, plus they have to agree to the “Humanist Oath” penned by Mubarak Bala.
“Atheists Helping Atheists” is a new phenomenon. The closest comparison to Humanist.Global is perhaps the A+ Kiva Lending Team for Atheists, Agnostics, Skeptics, Freethinkers, Secular Humanists and the Non-Religious. The difference is huge, however, because the A+ Kiva team gives funding to anyone, most likely traditional religious people whereas Humanists.Global funds only atheists in dire need because they’re ostracized.
Humanists.Global lists 5-12 candidates on its Donate Page, seeking funds in $20 increments. Every profile explains why they abandoned religion, how they will spend the $300, and their estimate of monthly profit. Like Kiva, every candidate profile displays how much money is needed to reach the $300 goal.
What do donors get for their generosity? A tax deductible receipt (for US citizens) plus a Thank You letter from the recipient, a photo, and regular updates of the project’s progress.
For atheists who want to assist atheists in developing nations, Humanists.Global provides a unique and personalized service.
